Qwo Cellulite Treatment

Qwo Cellulite Treatment

What is Qwo®?

Qwo® is the first injectable cellulite treatment approved by the FDA. Studies have revealed that approximately 90 percent of women struggle with the appearance of cellulite. The most common areas for cellulite include the thighs and the buttocks, where the body naturally holds more fatty tissue. Cellulite may also affect men, but this is far less common. The reason more women develop dimpled skin is that they hold more fat in certain areas of the body. However, cellulite should not be confused with excess fat. Even thinner women have cellulite. This condition of dimpled skin occurs because fibrous septae that tether the skin to underlying muscle pulls inward as fat cells push outward.

Qwo contains collagenase clostridium histolyticum, an enzyme that chemically severs the fibrous bands that pull on the skin. Specifically, it destroys Types I and II collagen in a target area. In the field of orthopedics, collagenase clostridium histolyticum has been used for many years. Qwo is the first cosmetic application of this substance.

What are the benefits of QWO treatments?

Qwo treatment is advantageous first and foremost because it is nonsurgical. No incisions are necessary, and patients do not require downtime to recover. The procedure is performed in the office and, because it is limited to a number of injections, does not require anesthetic of any kind. This allows patients to enjoy a convenient, speedy appointment.

Another benefit of Qwo injectable cellulite treatment is that this drug has undergone extensive clinical testing to gain FDA approval. While Qwo is a newer treatment, patients can trust in the clinical data that exists to confirm the safety and efficacy of this injectable drug.

Good Candidates for QWO

Qwo injections have been approved for the treatment of buttocks cellulite in healthy women. In clinical studies, Qwo injections worked well in women of all ages, skin tones, and of varying weight categories. More than age and weight, it is the condition of the skin that is relevant to the responsiveness to Qwo injections. The best candidates for this cellulite treatment have true dimples caused by fibrous septae, not loose skin.

Sometimes, what appears to be dimples are simply divots caused by tissue laxity. If a gentle upward pull on the skin causes a dimple to disappear, it is more likely that the cause is looseness, not true cellulite. That said, the best way to know if Qwo is right for you is to consult with a provider who has been fully trained to administer this treatment and to understand what it can and cannot achieve.

What areas of the body can QWO treat?

The current FDA approval for Qwo is for the buttocks area. At some point, doctors may begin using Qwo off-label, similar to the use of other injectables. However, as studies are ongoing, healthcare providers are slow to expand the use of Qwo to other areas, such as the thighs.

The maker of Qwo continues to explore the effects of injections on the thighs to determine the number of injections necessary to achieve optimal results. As these studies continue, doctors can determine the most effective use of this drug to help patients address the problem of cellulite.

Patient Testimonial

"I had a GREAT experience! Front office staff was VERY pleasant, I was taken in 5 mins EARLY and seen by Tori (wonderful, warm, sweet) then Dr Lucas. Dr Lucas was great!! Listened to my concerns, offered suggestions none of the other doctors suggested and did a through body scan. Her personality, warmth and knowledge really made me feel very comfortable. I will definitely be back to see Dr Lucas in the future!"

Are there any risks or side effects?

Few side effects have been noted with Qwo treatment. Although low, there is a risk of allergic reaction. In most cases, patients experience bruising, swelling, and minor discomfort. Patients need not schedule time off of work or other normal activities to recover from Qwo injections. However, it should be noted that bruising can be significant after the initial treatment. At this time, it is thought that this more extensive bruising could be caused by the effect of the collagen-breakdown process on blood vessels in the treatment area. This side effect is much more subtle after the second and third round of injections.

How many treatments you will need

Each treatment visit may include up to two treatment areas. QWO injections will be given three weeks apart for a total of three treatment visits.
