| Sclerotherapy Aesthetics Spider veins, or telangiectasias, are those tiny purple and red blood vessels found most commonly on the thighs or lower legs of women. They are hereditary and can form anywhere on the leg, from the top of the thigh to the ankle. Occasionally, spider veins appear on the face. Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure used to treat painful, varicose and tiny veins on the legs. They worsen with age and pregnancy. The best treatment for them is sclerotherapy, which involves painlessly injecting a solution into the veins to make them disappear gradually over months. The sclerotherapy procedure itself takes anywhere from 30-45 minutes and is basically painless with some mild cramping when larger veins are injected. Sclerotherapy has been used on patients worldwide since the 1930's and remains the primary effective treatment of both varicose and spider veins. Most patients are able return to their daily routines immediately after their sclerotherapy treatment. Exercise and other strenuous activities should be avoided for 7-10 days if possible. The autumn or winter season are the best time for treatment. Right after sclerotherapy we recommend to apply compression bandage for three days. Patients should also stay away from sun baths in order to avoid pigmentation marks. |
